quilt monday-inspiration

This AMAZING quilt is from the same Japanese quilting magazine issue as this post. The top is all hand stitched, and is open, not really a "top" I the traditional sense. But, now that I think of it, weren't all yo-yo quilts pieced like this? with no batting or backing? Gammie, please comment if you know. Please click for a closer look. I am realizing I need to do a quilt Monday on yo-yo quilts. the perfect t.v. project, really.
