sock distractions.
Over the weekend I went to the Japanese bookstore and found this. It's new to me, but I see others have found it and love it too, who wouldn't? See more photos over on crafting Japanese. ISBN 4579110617.
These are all made of socks or gloves. The cute/sad factor here is killing me.
The directions seem really clear and easy to do. I think they are pretty small, because socks and gloves just aren't all the big, you know?
This photo! on the distressed blue chair. too good.
so hard to choose, but this is my favorite. I need to get out the socks! Most of these actually require 2 socks, not just the lowly one sock we have so many of floating around. . .

are you kidding me??? so cute! i'm liable to put all 4 projects i have in the works down, just to make one of these!!!

Those are so precious. I love the spotted-eye dog! I hear exactly what you mean about the cute/sad factor...

I just made my first Japanese magazine purchase. I'm going to be hooked I know.

That little fish one is very cute. I think he's my favorite!

From the title of this post I thought maybe you had taken up knitting socks yourself! hehe These are all just. too. cute! Love the little fishy. :)

I saw this same book over the weekend when I was *set free* to go to the Japanese bookstore in town. I'm with you, its so full of cute stuff. Who knew socks could look so...so...so...huggable?

(The pig is made from a glove, see the little icon on the top of the page? You knew that.) And you're right. That blue chair. Iwagimaya: dangerous. Thanks for the cuteness! Love your blog!

Those are so adorable. Thanks for sharing the pictures! My favorites are the elephant, pig and fish. A sock fish!!

Oh, man. These are going to keep me out of the garden this spring, I just know it.
Posted by: kelly | March 08, 2006 at 02:53 PM
The chair and fish look so good together, but I'm in love with them all.
Posted by: Gina | March 08, 2006 at 03:23 PM
what i love about these toys is that they require not fancy socks, not striped socks, but sport socks... I love them all! I must make the white doggy because he resembles tank so much... even his stunned, innocent expression reflects so much of tank's bewilderment at the things he gets in trouble for (eating garbage, licking the dishwasher when it's open, drinking pee from the potty chair - eww). But he remains steadfast in his doe-eyed "what??? what'd I do wrong?" expression. I just drove by Uwajimaya today! should have stopped.

They're all so cute! I think the elephant is my personal favorite. I think this goes right along with one of those "things I never imagined I'd be in to before I had kids". Sheesh, making dolly aprons and sock animals, what's next?!...who cares, it's all so much fun!

This is the one book that I am just lusting after! I want to get it so badly...I just might have to figure out how to get my hands on it :) Let us know how your projects go, please!

Oh no! So tempting. I really must resist buying another book, but wow. I may need this one.

Oh, the dog. Got to love the dog. Perfectly squeezable!

They are gorgeous. Love that next to the icons it has the name of what it is sakana (fish), buta (pig), kuma (must be bear) and zou (elephant, obviously but my Japanese is quite hazy so might have that one wrong!)

I have been looking for a vendor who sells the bok to no avail? Any ideas where I might find it?
Posted by: amysue | March 09, 2006 at 06:51 AM
I got some soft new sport socks... with pale gray toes ... just waiting to get busy.

Oh my goodness! I MUST have this book? Has anyone figured out where to find it besides local Japanese book stores? I don't know that we have many around these parts.

We have that same store in Seattle--not too far from me. I don't know why, but it never dawned on me that they'd have craft books. I see a trip to Seattle in my near future! By the way, love the sockie pets and I'm sure you will create an even more stunning version soon!

Those are so cute! I've been looking for a bunny pattern for an easter gift--I've been inspired!
Posted by: Kristin | March 09, 2006 at 09:01 AM
i just bought that one too!
of course, i had to go the amazon japan route... it's probably better that i can't go to the store to get these books!

a take on the old sock monkey routine. we started several of those early this year and need to finish them--the girls want to make them some clothes!!

These are so darn cute. Why are all the cute crafty books published in Japan? Maybe I'll have to tag along with my stepson if he ever decides to visit his favorite country! :) I seriously want that elephant!

I enjoy reading your blog... and just wanted to pass on another website you might enjoy - also sock critters, but of a different stripe! www.sockcreatures.com
I really love your miniature quilts, I wish I had the skill/dedication for those!

when i first saw your title, i thought, oh no, another post about knitted socks (that i have no interest in personally although i think they are cute) so i almost just clicked off and then something told me to scroll down and low and behold i saw these japanese sock creatures and i just about fainted with all the cuteness. goes to show you, you can judge a post by it's title.

Yes, I am dying over the pink pig with the wooden button nose. way too much cute.

I saw this book last summer and had such a hard time walking away from it, but it was just too expensive at the particular store that I was in. But holy cow! I fell in love with it and had to whisper sweet nothings into the adorable puppy's ears before leaving the store.
Posted by: gigi | March 10, 2006 at 02:04 PM
Those are great! I love the elephant.
Posted by: Dacia | March 11, 2006 at 02:15 PM
I sooooo want to get my hands (feet?) on this book! I am really jealous, can't wait to see what you create! How will you choose?
Posted by: Tiff | March 13, 2006 at 03:18 PM
I want the little fish like now! Cute.
Posted by: Serena | March 15, 2006 at 10:02 AM
I have this book, and I think it's my new favorite. Of course the photography, and then the projects themselves are way cute, and so easy! Except the elephant, which is adorable, but really hard to get the head right. I bought a three pack of grey athletic socks, and it just may take all three.
