about a B. maybe an A-
This week was long. LONG. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. I am so happy it is Friday. In a fit of munchies combined with laziness (meaning I didn't want to leave the house) I decided to try a treat during the smaller one's naptime. These chocolate dipped marshmallows (which I think should be called top hats) were pretty dang good. Two things I would do differently-actually three, if you count this next sentence. I like dark chocolate chips (Trader Joe's are my fave) but I wonder if they should be mixed with a milk chocolate, because these were a bit rich.
But here's the thing, I didn't use TJ's chips, I used ghirardelli chocolate chips, and even though every few years I make this mistake, I have to keep reminding myself I really don't like this brand of chocolate. There is a weird understate of alcohol to it which I don't dig. The second thing (or third) is I put them in the fridge to set up, and then, you know, to test them-I ate a bunch, and chilled marshmallows just aren't so good, even ones dipped in chocolate. When I took them out (after they set) and ate them at room temp they were way better.
I tried rolling some in some sprinkles for the girls, but that was a disaster, sprinkling from the top would have been better. Still, overall, not bad for a sweet tooth fix from the pantry in less than 10 min. I heart microwaves, chocolate meltly miracles that they are. And I heart long skewers, too.

Oh man that sounds good but if I ate that I would be so sick! I love that dish, I had a set of cups and saucers in that pattern that I just gave to my sister, so pretty!

Ack! I was already having a bad chocolate craving today. But chocolate with marshmallow?! Now my mouth is really watering! :D

Yummm, I could eat 10, but then I'd not go to the bathroom for a week probably!

Look yummy!
Interesting that you like the TJs dark chocolate over Ghiradelli - the TJs chips come from Ghiradelli. When they've brought boxes out from the back they've had "G" on the side & I've seen them ring up on the register as "G" chips.

I like the TJs chips, too! I've been thinking about you this week, dude!

they're so pretty. now I have to go get some trader joe's dark chocolate chips. you enabler...

okay-I was so surprised to read TJ chips being Ghiradelli, so I looked at the Ghiradelli bag I used, and yeah, I am totally mental-they were bittersweet!! that's why they were so sour. .

Yum! Sort of like Tunnock's Tea Cakes, minus the biscuit base. They don't do chips as far as I know, but I love Green & Black's dark chocolate. It's a bit pricier in the States, but worth having as a stocking stuffer if you haven't tried it yet! I also really dislike that alcohol flavour some chocolate can have, especially cheap 'fancy' boxes of chocolate. Blech.

I love those bittersweet ghiradelli chips just to eat a few at a time for a chocolate treat.
Ghiradelli is the only easily-gotten chocolate chip that uses real vanilla. I wonder if that is part of what accounts for the weird taste to you?
This is a great food treat idea and except for the microwave part, I am going to try it at home. (no microwave)

Years back, there was a steaming debate in the blogopshere: Are Peeps really candy or just some cruel joke at Easter? :)It seems, some people did not get the magic of a party coloured marshmallow chick.
Just think, if you stacked three of those marshmallows together and then dipped them, you'd have chocolate covered snowmen. (assuming, of course, that you decorated as such.) The Peeps debate could be resurrected ---my vote would be... "yummy!"
Actually, that's rather disturbing. Maybe I shouldn't be leaving comments on 4 hours of sleep?(Why do they call kid sleep overs, SLEEP overs?)

but they are cute, so that bumps them up at LEAST half a letter grade. right?
i always kind of counted on that. ;)

I am going to remember this easy dessert for the next party I need to attend. And I am going to call them Top Hats. They would look adorable on a snowman plate. Also, great tip about TJ's dark choclate chips. I did not know.

It'd be fun to come up with a hot cocoa recipe that uses a chocolate-dipped marshmallow as a starter. Something like, one cup of milk, two choco-marshmallows & voila! Whatever works.
And, I think they should be called tophats. That's perfect.

Chocolate covered marshmallows with sprinkles sound so yummy!

I have made these before, but I used the lollipop sticks you can buy and stuck the marshmellow on the stick and then rolled it in the chocolate. This way they are also easy to dip in sprinkles, nut, coconut or what ever you like. This also make them easy for the little ones to eat. They are super yummy.

if you put the chocolately marshmallows on the back of a fudge-stripe cookie (and a small, yellow square of icing) it will look like a pilgrim's hat and taste like s'mores! (i got the idea from Family Fun Magazine years ago and have made them every year since.)

OK Jenny...what country are you living in that doesnt have marshmallows??? Thats just wrong I tell ya!! lol

Hmmm, sweet!!!!

if you can, try guittard chips. they are quite good. i have seen them offered in the bulk section of whole foods, groceries sell them too, but not as readily as ghiradelli. i will now have to add marshmallows to my shopping list.

Oh I love this idea. My son is deathly allergic to milk so it is tough to find fun festive treats for him but these I can do with the dairy free chocolate and it won't feel so much like he is missing out. Thanks for the idea!

Yummy, Amy! I was just going to echo Wende's post by saying you should stack 3 to make them into a snowman. I saw that recently and thought it was genius (okay, maybe not GENIUS, but a darn good idea!)

Been awhile since I bought marshmallows. But I think I will put them on my grocery list.

I agree with the guittard recommendation. I LOVE both their semi and milk chocolate chips (the milk ones are so, so creamy and the lack of any sort of wax or stabilizers in their chocolate is evident by how fast they melt on a fingertip) and I live in Portlandia too. Safeway has them, and once on a shameful midnight jaunt, I saw a huge crate of them at WinCo too.
And I love the picture of the marshmallows so much.

Hi there, I just made some chocolate-dipped goodies for Christmas and found that adding a bit of paraffin to the melted chocolate chips sets the chocolate quickly before it hits the counter (which might help with your "top hat" effect). It also adds a bit of shine to the coating. Very pretty.

Dipping in melted caramel and then chocolate is awesome, too! The sweet of the caramel will offset some of the bittersweet effect.

I love chocolate dipped marshmallows. My favorite is Tuccelli. They make them from scratch, using all natural ingredients.
