stuff that looks like other stuff
I love these cups from crate and barrel. I snoozed and didn't buy the larger ones and now they only have these petite (but not as useful) espresso size. Still, I really dig them. The whole ceramic-looking-like-a-disposable thing kills me, like these containers at yoyo ceramics, thanks sarah. These porcelain dishes that are cast from take-out containers as molds are stellar as well.
And how much do I love The Curiosity Shoppe anyway? A whole lot. Much time is spent there cruising around and also reading their shop blog. I love it when cool shops have blogs. And restaurants, too, like Little Red Bike Cafe. Oh, and speaking of Portland restaurants, we had a lovely dinner at Cava the other night. It's Amy and Randy's new restaurant. You can see their drool worthy menu here—please get the profiteroles. Please. It's the nicest place to hang out, I highly recommend it. And they have a kids menu too, although the only kid we had with us isn't eating grilled cheese yet and thankfully was asleep most of the meal.

If you haven't, call a Crate&Barrel store to look for the other size. They can search thru other location's inventory. They may have it even though you don't see it online and they ship!

Amy, I've been following your writing for a bit now *thoroughly enjoy it* read this blog to see another stuff that looks like other stuff:

while the link that takes you to the "dixie cups" will tell you that they are no longer found, you will enjoy the photo of ceramic dixie cups from Amy's blog.
Happy Sunday nite to you...

ha, I just ordered those cups in white yesterday, big & small. I think the little ones will be excellent for kid hot chocolate, also I have wholly unrealistic tiny baked dessert fantasies!

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog! I have your book and no time to do projects..sadly! I made the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin recipe you had a while back to complete raves. I had been in Portland in September for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it! I only wish I had more time there as it was a business trip and rather structured. I did visit the Body Worlds exhibit and rowed Crew on the Willamette. Also Powell's Bookstore...well I just wouldn't get much done if I lived there because I wouldn't want to be in Powell's all of the time! I do have plans to make it back there...someday..someday!!!

whoops..I meant I WOULD want to be in Powell's all of the time.

Isn't Cava lovely!! My husband and I had a completely divine dinner there a week ago, and I can't wait to go back. It wasn't just the food, it was the service as well. So warm and friendly! Perfect for a date night!

I used to have cup that looked exactly like the one from the (French) coffee machines. They looked a tiny bit crushed, they were oh so cool!
I got them from
http://www.tse-tse.com/
Tse&tse in the Marais in Paris. But it was like hmmm 10 years ago. They don't do them anymore.
My boss was an organization freak and tried several time by mistake to trash my cute tumbler. I used to leave it by my computer to tease him.

I ADORE those look-a-like takeout containers! I should probably stop drooling and just buy them, but now I've got cute little coffee cups on the brain! Sigh...
Love your blog, and don't comment as much as I should - I'm sorry! I love it when it feels like the crafting world picks your brain, and you sooo picked mine with this post! Love those look-a-likes!

Go Amy! She's who turned me onto encaustic ;)

I love that cup! I also like stuff that looks like other stuff. You would probably also like the italian brand Seletti. They make a range of porcelain that is shaped like takeaway containers, sandwich containers, tin cans, egg cartons and my favourite, a ceramic milk carton you can use as a milk jug! Check it out at:

My excursion through the Curiosity Shoppe was lots of fun. My favorite was the slingshot pencil. It would have come in very handy when I worked for the newspaper.

I LOVE these ceramic mugs which mimic the ubiquitous NYC disposable coffee cup! They make me smile every time I see them.

We discovered Cava a few weeks ago, what an excellent excellent place to eat. Have you had their fries? To die for seriously. I think they may be the best fries I've ever tasted. And that smokey tea, crazy good food there.

A friend gave me one of those cups with a Peet's hot cup ring on it, filled with homemade brittle and toffee and wrapped in holiday celophane. I love that cup!

My husband bought me a stovetop espresso maker for xmas, so I had to have the crate and barrel espresso cups too! I love them and I found them on sale a few weeks ago!

I have to plug the Little Red Bike Cafe! I live around the corner and am so happy to have them in the neighborhood. Cute place, great food and drink, nice people.
Miz AC, I have been reading your blog for awhile and thought I recognized many names and places, but never made the connection that you are a fellow PDXer. And, I am dumb enough to admit it where anyone can read it.

I think the cups are cute too!
They have the 8 oz ones on sale online at the crate and barrel website for $2.50 if you are still wanting the bigger size.

Hi there! I've seen your link on quite a few blogs and so I thought I'd drop in for a look:) I just bought a sewing machine and so I'll definitely be back for tips (once I figure out how to work it..haven't worked one since seventh grade and that'd be about 25 years ago..ha!). Cava sounds great..We live in Bend so the next time we're in Portland we'll look it up. You have a fun site..I shall return!

Oh then you will most likely love these like I do. I really wish I entertained more to justify the prices of her pieces. It is really reasonable IF you would I use it, but I rarely would.

I just got those (both sizes)- waited for the after Christmas sale and was thrilled that they still had them. Mine are white. I'm the same way, love the pretend take-out thing. I think you read my mind sometimes. There was something else you just did that I did but I can't remember what it was. Oh yeah, it was the little chalkboard. Got one of those too, but hung ours on the wall...

More stuff that looks like other stuff: Check out these super cool vases that look like paper bags! too cute! http://www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?source=family&itemId=13473

I love stuff like that too! I once saw a glass carafe that looked like a plastic water bottle and regret not getting it because I haven't seen anything like it since!

Ooh! CUTE! Isn't stuff that looks like other stuff great? I bought 4 Crate and Barrel small bowls that look like those styrofoam cups with the wide band at the top. They're great and they stack, which is awesome. They look like take out cups. And they had lids for them, which I love! They don't make them anymore (just a year later! ak!), but we use them for Everything. Too fun. Oh, and LOVE The Curiosity Shoppe. Love.

I'm so glad you posted about those cups. I've been needing some inexpensive espresso cups since Christmas - those are perfect - Thanks, I just picked up 10!

Thanks for recommending Cava. We live in the neighborhood and haven't tried this place yet. There are already some awesome brunch options nearby, but we are always on the hunt for more dinner joints.
Posted by: Renee | January 21, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Thanks for posting these cups! I want the tall brown ones sooo bad, but oh well. Anyway, I'm using the tall white ones for teacher valentines. I plan to put in sample coffees and instant cocoa and tape a heart to the front that says Mrs. ______, you warm my heart. I think these cups will be perfect for that!

These remind me of the coffee mug I keep at work- it looks like the takeout cups I used to get in Philly.
