fixation of the week-

I have been obsessing a bit on getting these. We eat a lot of soup and sandwiches around here. Growing up, we had some tacky luncheon ones I loved from Wendy's—the kind you would get free with a kids meal, or something. They were red and hard plastic with Wendy's writing on them. We loved them. What's not to love about the food-in-compartment thing? Secretly, I am a food mixer. I love a good segmented tray as much as the next person but when I do eat, I tend to mix, dip, or just mess it up.
These are at Uncommon Goods and Amazon (I got a ton of new and vintage links from the eggplant) These are new, obviously, and that's my tough decision—do I buy new or get a lovely vintage set? And I need 3 sets, or preferably 5. . .oh, these decisions and issues. There's something so clean and simple about these, although looking at them now, they do look like a set for dog food. hmmm. Maybe vintage? But the shipping on ebay for ceramics is such a buzzkill. In another lifetime I would actually leave the house and thrift for these. . . .

I think it is the desire for comfort food and clean bright lines for spring. I picked-up some similar, more reasonably priced ones at Crate and Barrel on sale, CB2 might have them also. We use them for breakfast- yogurt and fruit, oatmeal, cereal coffee mug fits on flat surface, soup and sammy or salad...love ours. I can relate usually I would go search everywhere, yet really happy with ones I have....I can even swap out different bowls that may fill your thrift needs later.

I saw these very ones and thought the same thing: clean lines...too clean? i like the idea of mix-match vintage better, i think. i have three boys under 5--i feel your pain...but it is only for a season.

I love those. I have been looking at these ones from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/COLLECTIBLE-CANDLEWICK-DAISY-SANDWICH-PLATES-W-CUPS_W0QQitemZ360018387304QQihZ023QQcategoryZ23QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Very different, but still kind of cool. almost too oldschool for me, though.

Those are fantastic - I found a set of plain white soup cups with a small sandwich plate at Ikea a few years ago that I just love. More recently, my husband has had to physically pull me away from these more than once:

Plastic, yes - but colorful and a warm reminder of my youth.

I could use something like that because there is definitely not enough space on our dinner plates if we use our soup bowls.
Posted by: becky | February 04, 2008 at 09:44 AM
I like that a lot. I am picturing it with chili and cornbread. We'd also use it for salad... we do a lot of salads. Hmm, you are giving me an excuse to go shopping. :)

oh my gosh, these are fantastic. makes me wish i was having grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch. so, so clean and pretty!

I really like these too, but now I can only see dog bowls. We just made these little "pizzas" to go with our soup yesterday http://tiny.cc/yi66E . Only we used salami instead of mushrooms and just stuck them under the broiler for a few minutes.

Check out this one I saw on Kaboodle (a wish list site). Maybe a little too swoopy but it's only $4.95.

What I really want is a buddha bowl in a soup and sandwich set.

I have this set http://cgi.ebay.com/White-milk-glass-snack-set-Federal-Glass-HEATPROOF_W0QQitemZ300013658877QQihZ020QQcategoryZ4209QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem which I bought at a flea market several years ago. I love them so much but never use them as I'm not a soup person.

That is the most genius piece of pottery I've ever seen. I'm always balancing soup + bagel. I hate it when the bagel falls off the plate!

I have ogled over these myself! I love the idea of a soup and sandwich set like this. Vintage ones are oh so lovely, but if it can't go in the dishwasher it doesn't enter my house any more -- so no vintage dishes with painted on designs etc. unless I only plan to look at them and not use them!

FINALLY! Too weird, this is one of those, ask and you will receive moments :) We had soup and a sandwich for lunch. So I resorted to coffee mugs for the soup, because the sandwich wouldn't fit on the plate haha.
THANK YOU!

Yes, we are the same and I will check those out.

Resist resist resist!
Or if you can't, get the $4.95 ones...

Those are awesome, what fun

I love these...I've not seen these before. Will have to get busy finding some...we are big soup and sandwich eaters here! Especially this time of year...perfect soup time!

Well, thankyewverymuch Missy! Now you have got me longing for those little soup and sandwich sets!

I quite like those! But I have a fondness for Melmac of all things. We each had a set for camping, family camping and guide and scout camping. I've been searching for a coffee cup like the one my brother had in his set, but so far no luck. I want to give it to him as a nostalgia present, which is our custom at Christmas. Being me, I'd likely go for the vintage type, but those would be gorgeous on your tablecloths and in your pretty kitchen. :)_

I love these too, but then I found some at the thrift store. You can see them here: http://uberpaper.blogspot.com/2008/01/soup-for-me.html
Good luck!

I had to laugh because when I first saw the pic I thought, "Hmm, must be a dog food server-something-or-other." Maybe it's the shape of the bowl or somethin'...? Or sleep deprivation.

Those are great! Now I am hungry for grilled cheese and tomato soup!
Posted by: Ash | February 04, 2008 at 03:45 PM
These are in my "pile" of links to blog. I have been wanting one since I received the Uncommon Goods catalog unexpectedly before Christmas. Even though they're so plain, I can sort of imagine them being the dishes my kids fight over when I'm dead. Not to be morbid.

ugh! I passed up a great vintage set at a yeard sale this summer. I've been thinking about them ever since, huge regret. There is something nice and calming about the clean lines of these though. You can concentrate on the food!
Posted by: Kathy | February 04, 2008 at 07:24 PM
I think they're beautiful, but I have to admit as I was scrolling my blog reader down I saw the picture and thought they were dog bowls. But only for a couple of seconds, I swear.

Love these! Makes us ready for lunch...and it is way past dinner!

Neat! I didn't realize there was such a thing. We had soup and sandwiches for dinner tonight and I was wishing I had something nice to serve them on/in.

I didn't know it existed! It 's been a few weeks now that I try to find some cute way to carry a sandwich and a nice cup of tea to my desk. This looks so American to me I just love it. Better than the Cute but too small Shinzi Katoh cup plus tray I found at 3 potato four.
Anyway. You must have been tagged a gazillion time, but I wanted you to know that you blog is one among the 10 who make my day. Many thanks!

yeah i remember when i used to be able to leave the house to thrift too. ahh the good old days.

Ya' know, I thought they were dog bowls at first glance....but that can be cool in its own way.
Posted by: Jill A. | February 05, 2008 at 05:16 AM
Hmmm... since it's windy/blustery (and gritty, living in a desert) and a little chilly, tomato soup and grilled cheese sound just about right with these. But once my appetite is satiated, I'd be thinking of using these on my dresser or hallway table as the catch-all for keys, change, cell phone, etc. Thanks for sharing!
Posted by: Michaele | February 05, 2008 at 05:43 AM
Oh, I love these. I am a bit of a nut for compartmentalized dishes also.
Posted by: Sandy | February 05, 2008 at 06:07 AM
I've been obsessing over a little snack tray set for awhile too. I can't seem to find the right thing and don't want to spend too much. These are nice, especially with the the picture of tomato soup and grilled cheese.
Posted by: mary | February 05, 2008 at 06:45 AM
I think they are at Target.com too. I just ordered them a few days ago!!! I can't remember if I ordered them from Target or Amazon. But yes I think they are so love too.
Posted by: alicia | February 05, 2008 at 06:55 AM
these are wonderful - I am currently obsessed with white dishware and the compartments, well an added bonus!
Posted by: Kim | February 05, 2008 at 07:54 AM
Those are really nice. The raised edge makes it perfect for carrying the soup 'n sandwich without spills. I'd make the most terrible waitress. I love the clean lines. Like someone said, I bet they're also available at Crate & Barrel or CB2. Let us know what you decide, because you ARE going to get some!
Posted by: the farmers wife | February 05, 2008 at 08:17 AM
Those are much cuter with food in them...haha... as they are they do look kinda dog-food-friendly, but I think Iw ould still be happy with a set. (^_^)
Posted by: amigurumigirl | February 05, 2008 at 09:45 AM
I want them in red but recognizing the limited storage capacity of my cabinets am exercising major restraint and not even looking to see if they come in red. At least not yet.
Posted by: Toby | February 05, 2008 at 11:23 AM
These are beautiful! I love the clean lines, and crisp white color....it really is the perfect luncheon plate and bowl set. Well now it has me wanting to make soup for dinner tonight!
Posted by: heather | February 05, 2008 at 12:41 PM
I admit, I thought these were pet bowls. But that is just me. The soup/salad/compartment idea is great---I say go vintage!
Posted by: Jennifer | February 05, 2008 at 04:27 PM
These are super awesome! These make me want some grilled cheese and soup!
Posted by: jennifer | February 05, 2008 at 09:50 PM
You can use them for other things besides soup. Like sandwiches and fries. Or fish and veggies. Or steak and salad. Or rice and curry.
Or anyother combination of the above ;)
They're even fun for breakfast - cereal in the bowl, and eggs or toast & cheese on the plate.
Posted by: Pomegranate | February 06, 2008 at 12:50 PM
oooo i LOVE these! we, too, eat lots of soup/sands. it's a good winter meal.
funny story: last night the whole of my family went to a restaurant for dinner. my youngest refused to eat the grilled cheese that he ordered because it didn't come with tomato soup. because, when you're 5, what you know as normal is what the world should provide. LOL
Posted by: rebecca | February 07, 2008 at 11:08 AM
cool, I got some vintages plates like that recently (minus the bowls) & LOVE them. Great for the kids.
Posted by: Christie | February 07, 2008 at 05:13 PM
Dog bowls. At first sight, I thought these were dog bowls.
Posted by: Lex | February 08, 2008 at 05:58 AM
I love the cutting and mixing of the meal. I like to get all the cutting out of the way first thing and then get rid of the knife, stir it all together and eat. MMMM. I didnt think those were dog dishes but they are a little lacking in personality. I actually make the best ceramic cat food dishes you will ever find.
