primitve dolls wearing shawls

Img_6358

I got these very sweet primitive painted dolls for the house for Spring/Easter. They are from Bayberry Cove, which is a lovely shop, I always fall in love with something when I look there. These are designed by Stacey Mead and I can't find much about her online, but did find this amazing pig, which I might need as well.

I have only made a painted rag doll once, from a Gail Wilson kit, and I totally loved it. It was so fun making a muslin doll, stuffing it, and then painting it. I really would love to make more. (When?) So, I thought about making something similar to these, but time is limited right now and I wanted to get something up before next week—so I had to buy these. They are wearing shawls and little slippers! You understand.

On the  other shelf next to the dolls are these turned wood people and eggs with watercolor added by the girls. I think Pete added the faces, but I wasn't around for this craft project, so I'm not sure. They have quite a few egg shapes at Casey Wood Products, which is where all this stuff came from.

Unrelated, I plan to get some books from the library about handwriting analysis. Just cause. I have always wanted to know more about it. I distinctly remember what all my friends handwriting looked like in middle school, with the note writing and all. . . do middle schoolers still write notes? Or is it all texting now? That would be so sad, I loved looking at handwriting growing up, now, I love it when it looks familiar, you know? Like, when I really know it, and could spot it right away. I need to handwrite out some blog posts, that would be cool.

You know about these swell people who might just make a font out of your writing? http://kevinandamanda.com/scrapbook/fonts/fontsforpeas/

Then, you could use a computer AND handwrite a blog entry... :)

I wondered recently about note writing in school too... with all the technology in the babysitter's backpack.
If I spent as much time doing my homework as I did crafting, doodling and coloring notes, I'd have my PHD.
Love the shawls and slippers.

I love handwriting too! I wrote a post this week about how, as a physician, I'm going to miss seeing my colleagues' messy handwriting when we switch to electronic medical records.

http://www.freshmd.com/fresh_md/2008/03/handwriting.html

You should definitely handwrite your next post and scan it in. Then we can all tell you whether we're surprised by what it looks like, and why.

I've always wanted to get my handwriting analysed so I could totally screw with the person - I'm ambidextrous and I'd just love to switch hands right in the middle of the sample!

i have a few of those wooden eggs, i use them for sizing when making egg cosies (i used real eggs once but cracked one, made a right mess!). one of my biggest bug bears about bought egg cosies is most of the time, they are made just too small, so annoying!.

i love handwriting too, i've been looking at ways of putting together tags for stuff i make, but am so tempted to just handwrite them rather than print anything. i was looking through my daughters homework folder the other day (she's 6), to see how much her handwriting has changed since september, she used to do her letters so big, and now they are so small, really cute!

I love the pig!

It's surprising how handwritng represents a person so fittingly. When I come across notes or letters of my late partner it's as evocative as being reminded of his scent or favourite music.

I do feel handwriting will be another social connection lost to technology.

Perhaps we should start a hand written blogs only day. I'd love to see the handwriting of fellow bloggers.

Oh no! If middle schoolers are no longer writing notes, then the fine art of notepaper folding may be lost to a whole generation.

Seriously, though, I think that folding note in new and exciting manners was one of my first self-directed crafts.

My Dad was just asking tonight (when I was explaining to him what a blog was), what's happened to writing a note, and putting it in the post, and someone having the excitement of receiving it, and reading something that's been handwritten especially for them.....
Must send more handwritten letters to friends. Not more texting or emails, or blog comments.

I'm fascinated by handwriting analysis too. I had mine analysed once and it was scarily accurate :o

Texting is big but my girls still send and recieve notes and spend hours writing in secret diaries just as I did.

I love the dolls, I think I love the turned wood ones even better ... I wonder where I could find some in the UK.

Loving your blog.

I've posted about my favorite handwriting books here.I find the whole idea fascinating. I'd love to read a post on your blog in your own handwriting and like the possibility of getting one's own font.

The art of handwriting does seem to be fading. This site does a lot with handwriting too. http://1000wordsphotography.typepad.com/allie/
She has tons of free ones and will make one for you for 5$.
I love those primitive dolls. I like to try to imagine how they came about and who would have owned them. I wouldn't have thought to use watercolor on the wood but I love it. I may have to pick me some up!

Ooooh! I have also always been fascinated by people's handwriting. My printing is meticulously neat. My co-workers used to joke about getting someone to analyse it. They thought it would reveal that I am some kind of serial killer or something. I think it would just reveal that I am a serial perfectionist.

If you're looking to practise analysing handwriting, I'd be happy to send you a sample! :)

I have a middle schooler and I find handwritten notes in her pockets every time I do laundry. She can 'speak' fluent text to her pals as well... I think they do both. Easier to do the written notes in class though- the teacher can't take your cell that way.

I bought that Gail Wilson doll kit too. Yours looks beautiful-

The arms on the peg dolls are killing me. Too stinkin cute!

My best friend and I still have many of the notes we sent each other in junior high. Mortifying. It's like I had absolutely no filter and I was a total ham.

I was going to mention the folks who'll make your handwriting into a font as well. Jess at How About Orange did a post on it a couple of weeks ago.

My best friend teaches high school and according to her, it is definitely all about the texting. I have crazy, funky handwriting and I love it- even if my husband is always teasing me about it.

Good to hear that the girls are still writing notes!

I just started making dolls, but I haven't done any face painting yet. A doll kit would be a good place to start. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love the dolls and the pig! I think I may have to get one.

I'm so happy to have stopped by. This was a great post! I found you at AE Designs.

That WOULD be cool! Though maybe hard to read. Maybe just a short one?

I love handwriting too. I'm awfully tempted to make a font of my handwriting and then do all of my blog posts as image files in it. (I'm too lazy to write everything now... sad, I know)

Hey there, I just got your book today...
If my students are any indication, then middle schoolers DO still write notes. The problem is that they don't do it often enough, so they need more practice at being sneaky. My kids just turn their bodies around and shake the paper in the recipient's face.

I am really into handwriting too and recently checked out a book on handwriting analysis from the library - if I can remember the title I will get back to you! Still wanting to do my best handwriting in Fontifier, for $9 {i think} you get your handwriting in a font.

Both notes and texts. Our school has a strict "no phone" policy for class time. If students are caught with a phone it is confiscated until the end of the day. However, texting does happen in the hall during passing time. Crazy considering our high school has less than 50 kids in it. They see each other in every other period...

I've been thinking about getting my hand writing made into a font.
But it is a bit none descript, at school I tended to take on the handwriting of who ever was sitting next to me.
I wonder what that means?
(probably that I was copying their work!)

my 10 year old daughter (4th grade) is totally into cute notebooks and sending notes to all her friends, they also have notebook/diary things that they exchange and write in.

your post has inspired me to dig out wooden eggs and stuff today, and paints and let the kids create. thanks for the kick in the butt to craft with the kids!!

I am afraid to go to the animals... I have a soft spot for the pigs and cows stuff....

Those wooden watercolor dolls are just wonderful. They look very modern, but I'm sure they are something that you will treasure forever.

I love all your creativity. I totally enjoy cute and fun animals like those. I enjoy making them and it is so fun to see how crazy you can get.Keep it up.

I tried that fontifier thing. They give you a free preview, and mine looked like crap. You have to be really careful about the position of your handwriting, and I think it's impossible to do cursive unless you have perfectly metered script. I'd just write a blog on paper and scan it in.

Shawls and little slippers...

Oh yes, I DO understand!

Middle school students are definitely still into writing notes. Soon after our baby was born, my husband confiscated a note that two of his students were passing. He read it after class. It said: "Baby G is soooo cute! :) :)" "She is the cutest baby EVER!!"
Naturally, the two did not get in trouble after gushing about our baby.

So beautiful your painted dolls! I alway fall in love when visiting Bayberry Cove as well ;-)
I hope you're having a lovely weekend!

They still write notes in school. I find them inshreds in the laundry after they have forgotten to take them out of their pockets:-)

I love handwriting too, and get to analyse it all day at work! I'm a forensic handwriting expert, but don't do the gender/age/personal characteristics thing - just comparisons to see if writer X wrote document Y. Still, I come across some pretty interesting formations. I love getting handwritten stuff in the post - I don't know how anyone can't!

EEk! Writing notes! What a beautiful memory! I dont think they do that nowadays. Maybe they do but much less than us :(

Somebody should declare Handwritten Blog Post Day so we can all see each other's handwriting.

This is a fave hobby of mine, or was when people hand-wrote. When I did the recipe-box thing I discovered that many old ladies of her era had the exact same handwriting as my Grandma! But both my husband and my dad have very distinctive (and different) handwriting, and my 3 siblings all write alike. What is that about I often wonder.

I love those wood people, so colorful!

Those are the neatest dolls. I'm going to go checkout that shop.

I remember exactly what my best friend's handwriting looks like. We wrote notes upon notes in high school. Full of inside jokes and code words and even drawings.
So books on handwriting analysis sound neat. I hope you find some good ones!

Middle Schoolers definitely still write notes. I am student teaching in the 7th grade and I have already snatched up two notes that my students were reading or passing while I was teaching them math! I've heard from other teachers that the students tend to text during classes where they have a substitute. So it's a mixture of both during the school day.

P.S. I love looking at your blog. You're so creative!

love the dolls!

My BF has a laptop with a touchpad and a pen-stylus-thingy, and there's a program on it that will make a font out of his handwriting. He wrote me a letter in it and I didn't realize that it had been typed and printed (until I noticed that all the e's looked exactly identical). SO cool.

Hi Amy - Just a quick note to say thanks so much for mentioning BayberryCove.com on your wonderful blog. I really appreciate it! I am happy you are pleased and hope you will visit us again for more goodies in the future. Until then, all my very best to you and yours.
