bias tape tutorial (all by machine)
Here it is! There are many ways to sew bias tape on and here's a method I don't describe in my book. It's all stitched by machine and is how I trimmed hem and pockets on this skirt. Enjoy, and hooray for totally unprofessional video making!
**if this video is unavailable, check back in a few hours, okay? I don't know what is up with You Tube, it was working fine before. . .I will keep checking it. You can also try this link here.

Thanks for posting this helpful and hilarious video! I taught myself how to sew, so it's neat to see how I'm *supposed* to be doing stuff!

Ok, so I have known how to do this for years, but I still watched because I knew you would make it hilarious! Thanks for the laugh! And love your stick Amy. She is a great actress. A very clean non-swearing actress. I think she should be a blog regular!

Heeheehee, that tutorial is great, very informative.
I HATE pinning, if I could sew everything without pinning I would be one happy camper. Thanks for showing me how to sew on bias tape!

Posted by: jennie | March 22, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Great! I loved the skirt, but was intimidated by the bias trim.
I love your choice of fabric, by the way!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've always wondered why one side was different than the others. However, I would LOVE for you to show me a curve or a mitered corner. Those kick my butt everytime.
BTW, loved the video and the stick Amy.

too funny, amy!!
Posted by: jessica | March 22, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Thanks for posting that--I'm a cursing-under-my-breath sewer, so this was a nice little tidbit--I always thought the bias tape was just annoyingly uneven, LOL!

That is sooo great! Thank you. I love the real time aspect.
Posted by: Alison | March 22, 2008 at 07:24 PM
Hilarious! And educational to boot. Who knew the two could go together so well?
Posted by: Stephanie | March 22, 2008 at 07:37 PM
cindy-
you can do curves the exact same way, because it on the bias, it will curve, I promise!
and posy gets cozy has a great tutorial for mitered corners:

Posted by: Amber | March 22, 2008 at 11:17 PM
You had me with, "I don't pin, because I don't want to." OH MY. This is freaking brilliant. I especially love how you "demo" the sewing part.
This is brilliant. I'm on hiatus this week, but will be linking this on Monday. Blessings.

I think this is my favorite tutorial of all time..... and I already knew how to do this!! I love entertaining tutorials, and this is the best I have seen! :)
Posted by: Nicole | March 23, 2008 at 12:55 AM
Thank you for that. I love the part where you "step away" and you just hear the sewing machine going. :)
Posted by: Kuky | March 23, 2008 at 01:12 AM
Finally, someone explains why the bias tape has wide and narrow sides! I have been sewing for over 20 years, and never knew that. Loved it, and just made my sewing life that much easier. Thankyou!
Posted by: heather | March 23, 2008 at 01:15 AM
Thank you Amy, tutorial on video rocks! of course we want more of that! happy Easter to you x
Posted by: fanja | March 23, 2008 at 01:23 AM
I love it! Can we have more tutorial videos, please? Could you show us how to put in a zip without crying?
Posted by: Friendly Flamingo | March 23, 2008 at 02:04 AM
So funny! I love it. This is the best way to do bias tape. The only thing I do different is to actually "stitch in the ditch"...stitch at the point where the two fabrics meet and that way you don't see any stitching on the front side.
