fabric shopping
I am finding much to be excited about over on the New Arrivals page at Reprodepot. This would make up so pretty as a spring dress for the girls. Okay, I am having a hard time deciding on fabric for the dresses this year. . .they may get more than one, since I already cut out 2 dresses last week. Curses.
So cool.
Also cool.
I love these bold shapes and colors. And I had a pet turtle named Herman.
And frogs! It's kind of papercut-y, so I love it.
And did you all hear that the Other Boleyn Girl (movie) is supposed to, um suck? Like really really suck. Our local reviewer gave it a D-. D-?? I mean, really? Is it that bad?

I don't know about the movie but you inspired me to read the book and its very good!
Posted by: Michelle | March 02, 2008 at 07:23 AM
Gosh, I hope it dosen't suck! The book is so good. I'll go see the movie even is it does get bad reviews.
On another movie note, I wanna see 'Be Kind Rewind' with Jack Black. That looks fuuuunny!
Posted by: Crystal | March 02, 2008 at 07:40 AM
I think I'll skip the movie and just read the book. I enjoyed The Constant Princess, so chances are I'll enjoy her other books . Love that frog fabric, btw!

the brown dot is great. could spend hours browsing the reprodepot site
Posted by: j | March 02, 2008 at 07:49 AM
I'd check out RottenTomatoes.com or IMDB--they are rated by people who have seen the movie rather than just critics--and they are usually right on the money! Hate to ruin a good book with a crappy movie.
Posted by: Shannon | March 02, 2008 at 07:55 AM
Yes, it is that bad! I think the NYTimes review had it dead on - "overeditited and underwritten." I was bored but each scene was only like 3 minutes long so it didn't give you a chance to really get into it. No inspiring acting or cinematography. But they did get the costumes right! I suggest just oogling the press photos and skipping the movie.
Posted by: Alice | March 02, 2008 at 07:59 AM
I didn't think it was that bad. It certainly wasn't as good as the book, but they never are.

We had dinner with my mother-in-law last night and she had seen the movie earlier that day. She went off! Granted, she is tirade prone to begin with, but she really, really hated it. She did say that the costumes were beautiful though. Sometimes, that is enough for me...
Posted by: Annie | March 02, 2008 at 08:43 AM
Love the fabric! Yeah, I figured the movie would suck as soon as I read "also starring Eric Bana".
Posted by: Alicia | March 02, 2008 at 08:45 AM
I vote for that 2nd fabric - I love it!
Posted by: Kelly | March 02, 2008 at 09:19 AM
Love both the frogs and the turtles. I could see how you'd have a hard time choosing.
And thank you for mentioning Easter dresses. It reminds me that I had planned to make one for my daughter and completely spaced it (though I'm not really making it from scratch, but piecing together an old, half-finished one that my mom started for my sister or me. It's got gorgeous smocking that she did. I just have to sew sleeves on and hem it.)
I am so impressed with all of you ladies out there in blogland that actually make clothes for your kids. Trust me, they will appreciate it more and more as time goes by.
I can't wait to see your finished product, Amy.

GREAT! I was so proud of myself for staying clear of the fabric shops until our tax return came in, and here it is, on your site, tempting me to buy . . . Oh well, I must head over there to at least "check it out". . . Thanks . . alot! ;)
Posted by: K | March 02, 2008 at 09:42 AM
supersuper super great fabrics!
I think I will wait for that movie on dvd, but I still think it looks good!
Posted by: ash | March 02, 2008 at 10:13 AM
I love that froggy fabric. That would be an adorable dress fabric for girls. Kinda ironic in a way. :) And I'm sad that the new movie sucks.
ps. I love your site.

i have to stay far, far away from reprodepot or else my paycheck somehow magically disappears. those frogs are mighty tempting . . .
Posted by: kate | March 02, 2008 at 10:21 AM
That's so funny - I just left my mom talking about how good the movie was - though her taste is questionable at best. Oh, and I love the new banner.

That frog fabric is perfect!

I LOVE the turtles, in fact I bought it in two colors at the end of December!!! I plan on using EVERY single inch of that fabric...for everything I can think of! And I think I need to go buy those cute little frogs!
Posted by: Heather B. | March 02, 2008 at 12:47 PM
My dad's name is Herman, but he doesn't look like a turtle - heehee.
Thanks for sharing the fabric.
Do show the dresses - I hope to sew some for my girls, too.

The book was so wonderful. But I can't see Nat Portman playing Anne Bolyen. Oh Well, thanks for the warning. Love the frog fabric!
Posted by: Tia Curtis | March 02, 2008 at 01:36 PM
Thank goodness there's so much fabric out there so that everyone finds something they love.
I clicked over there from here and, personally, I'm lovin' the Quilt With Me florals and the brown gingham oilcloth right now.
And, I just got some of the frog fabric recently from SewMamaSew and now wish I'd ordered more.
But, honestly, I can't really think of who might like that Wrangler fabric. Eeew. It's giving me the heebie-jeebies.
Posted by: Siri | March 02, 2008 at 02:22 PM
I concur on the love of the froggy fabric.
I am also dismayed about the recent news of "The Other Boleyn Girl" suckage.
I love Phillipa Gregory's books. But I may now have to wait until this doomed tale comes to TV versus devoting my theater-going bucks to a viewing. Sad (sniff, sniff).
Posted by: Maggie Sumner | March 02, 2008 at 02:33 PM
Love the turtles! I had a pet turtle named Leonard. When he was about 7 years old I found out he was a girl!
Posted by: Berrie | March 02, 2008 at 03:24 PM
OOOHHH..I am so sad that the movie is getting bad reviews..I was so looking forward to a girls night out to go see it! aaarrgghh.
Posted by: Amy Evans | March 02, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Not surprised about the Other Bolyen Girl. The book was OK but the fact that they are releasing the movie this time of year usually indicates it's a bit of a stinker.
Posted by: Mary | March 02, 2008 at 05:35 PM
I saw The Other Bolyen Girl, and although it wasn't my favorite movie, I liked it well enough. It was between Penelope and TOBG, both got terrible reviews. I haven't read the book so I can't compare (books are always better). I didn't think it was horrible, but could wait until it comes out on DVD. I do think the worst actor in the movie was Eric Bana.

Off to look for some new fabric. I love the bold shapes of the blues and red rectangles. And who doesn't love circles in a grid.
Posted by: Ericka B Traven | March 02, 2008 at 06:43 PM
My dh had a turtle named Herman too! Maybe it's just a turtle-y name? :)
Posted by: nava | March 02, 2008 at 07:04 PM
N don't tell me the movie is bad! i loved the book but usually movies aren't as good as books.
You've been tagged over at Lovie's Cotton Candy. I'm a new blogger so could you pretty please with sugar on top go to my blog and do the 50 Things

I love those textiles...beautiful!
Posted by: Bree | March 02, 2008 at 09:25 PM
O.K., look, OF COURSE the movie is not going to be as good as the book (they rarely, and I mean rarely, are) but it does not suck. Don't go spend $11 or whatever to see it on Saturday night...catch it at a matinee or rep theater. The costumes alone are totally worth checking out on the big screen and I think the two women play well opposite each other. That being said, as someone in that field of the entertainment industry, this film is pretty good for a Hollywood feature book adaptation.

The Other Boleyn Girl only gets 38% on rotten tomatoes.com too. Too bad.
Posted by: Kathi D | March 02, 2008 at 10:57 PM
The book is a great read, I'm not sure I'd want to spoil it by going to see it acted out by thos particular actors. Highbrow they are not.
Posted by: Steph | March 03, 2008 at 12:24 AM
great turtles - I'm going to see the film regardless...I know I will just swoon at the costumes and ignore the acting if necessary...bet it is nicely filmed
Posted by: annieb | March 03, 2008 at 03:31 AM
The paper review I read gave it a B. Oh well, I guess they are more forgiving.
Posted by: Rebecca | March 03, 2008 at 03:33 AM
Yahoo reviews it at a C+ for the critics, if that helps! :)
Posted by: Amanda | March 03, 2008 at 06:28 AM
I didn't read the book but I know a lot about that time period(history minor! YEA!). I thought the historical aspects were spot on as they say in Merry Ol' England. I have to agree with another poster... I ADORED Eric Bana in Troy but in this piece? um NO. I wanted to see penolope as well - and I still may see it this week - if it is still in the theaters!
I am also going through the same conundrum(sp?) on fabric. I bought my first Amy Butler Barcelona pattern and just bought a vintage 1963 shirt dress pattern that was *shockingly* in my SIZE! I am a size 18 so I hope it will work out...
Anyways... I really need a dress form - can you recommend any? Do you think one should get an adjustable one or spend the money to get a really nice one? THANKS!

I love reprodepot. I find myself at that sight several times during the week daydreaming. I love all of the Japanese imports that they have. And, I've been staring at that same frog print.
Posted by: Mellissa - wondermommy | March 03, 2008 at 06:38 AM
Oh I love that fabric!!!! Just beautiful!
That makes me sad about the movie, I was really wanting to see it. Maybe I'll wait until I can rent it for cheap :)
Posted by: Kim | March 03, 2008 at 07:11 AM
I love the frogs! I don't need any more fabric... I don't need any more fabric... I don't need any more fabric...

Thank you, thank you for introducing me to Reprodepot! I have been searching for the perfect almost-solid red and found it: http://www.reprodepotfabrics.com/mchstr.html

Love the frog fabric. My daughter has a pet frog. I so need to make her something out of that.
Posted by: Marcia | March 03, 2008 at 08:02 AM
urm, it has scarlett johanson AND natalie portman in it...it's bound to suck. stick to the bbc's tudors. much better.
kick ass fabrics by the way - you buy any of them in the end?
Posted by: hazeljoy | March 03, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Well I wasn't planning on seeing the movie anyway but after all these comments I may have to read the book.
That frog fabric is my favorite too (my daughter just did the whole frog thing in biology so it might traumatize her if I get some though, hehe).
Posted by: Jona | March 03, 2008 at 08:38 AM
I love the new masthead! Kudos to the artist!
Posted by: Evonne | March 03, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Love those frogs! Second favorites are the turtles and the blue sky-scraper-looking shapes :) We're in the process of choosing Easter clothing here to, although I won't be sewing it myself. Maybe next year I'll be brave enough to try.
Posted by: Lara N | March 03, 2008 at 10:23 AM
I had a turtle named Herman when I was 7!I saw the Other Boleyn Girl and it was ok. I loved the costumes and things like that. The historical part was lacking. What is one of the best books to read on this subject?
Posted by: amy | March 03, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Read the book and wait for the DVD. The fabric is real neat and can't wait to see a photo of the dresses.
Posted by: Bobbie Lynn Duran | March 03, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I've actually heard that most reviewers thought the movie was pretty good. I wouldn't worry too much about your local paper, it could very well be that the movie critic doesn't like that type of movie.
Posted by: Chris Howard | March 03, 2008 at 12:20 PM
Some times i think its just nice to suspend your inner critic and just go and enjoy the costumes and the pretty people. It most likely wont be fantastic but im sure it will look good.
also i have to confess as a book junkie sometimes i read great literature and some times i read the paper equivalent of afternoon tv soaps. i say go to the movie- and dont expect much more than a visually attractive gossip about the tudors. also just got a copy of 'bend the rules sewing'- which i have read from cover to cover just for the pleasure of your warm and personable chatty way of instructing. will attempt projects next week.
