I'd like to live in this jar.
I had been itching to do another paper cut this week and was able to bust this out 2 nights ago when I was supposed to be working on other things. I feel so much better.
Some random items:
-Quilt Market is this weekend in Portland. It's to the trade only (Bummer for most sewers, sorry.) but the good news is it's bringing a slew of big fabric designer rock stars to this town for a few days. This event over at Bolt featuring Heather Ross And Denise Schmidt is for everyone, so head on over—it should be a mad house! I hope there will be wristbands. It's this Friday, May 16th, from 5-7pm.
-I am so excited to see all the Pleated Beauty handbags on the Bend The Rules flickr group. Most of these newest ones were part of this BTRS swap organized by Clicky the Moose, so flipping cool!! You can vote for the next BTRS swap project at the link. This warms my heart you guys!!
-On the paper cutting topic, I finally have this book and this book
headed to me in the mail. I still need the Rob Ryan book here
. He's a knife wielding genius. His blog is here. Amazing. And his skirt design for Clothkits, even more amazing.
-The single Ked is still missing. I got another pair, but they are different, because if I replaced the exact pair, you know I would find the missing Ked. That's just how it works.

You could turn the single Ked into a shrine of orphaned and/or found items--sort of a place to store odd tidbits until their mates show up (or don't). A sign of hope that lost items eventually find their way back...or become something else useful somewhere else.

I haven't owned Keds since I was little. Those you linked to are C-UTE. I need to pick up a new pair for Summer to put a little spring in my step!

I have that Rob Ryan book and am done with it (I know, strange but true). So if you email me your address I'd be happy to send it to you.

Rob Ryan is a big favourite around here. If anyone is in the UK he's got a show at Tatty Divine, Brick Lane - details probably on his site.
I'd be happy if your Ked landed here, we can't get them in the UK - my old pair are holey everywhere, can get rid of them :)

I have those keds too, in the gray and yellow. Once I found out there were mint/navy ones, I wanted them too. They're just to fabulous to only have one pair! I hope you find the missing one.

WOW!! I had no idea they were swapping from your book. Thanks for the info. I can't wait to be in on the next one.

I'm on my way up to quilt market this morning! Yay! I can't wait to be home for a few days and surrounded by all the new fun stuff. Heaven, all rolled up into one weekend.

Omg - that is my absolute favorite paper cut you've done so far - how magical! It also has amazing balance and graphic impact. I am in love with the gently sloping exterior lines - beautiful! This reminds me a bit of Matisse when he went through his paper cutting stage. I can't wait to see more...

i made my first batch of dough last night from the artisan in five. going to buy a peel today and cooking up a loaf tonight. CAN NOT WAIT. thanks crazy portland ladies for getting me hooked.

OH, I am so jealous, my boss is at the "market" this weekend too. I would LOVE to go, but can't wait for her to get back to see all the "goodies" she brings.
Love your paper cut out, I'd like to live there with you. :o)

I've only been reading for a short time, but didn't realize that you were also a) in Portland and b) into scherenschnitt. I learned from my mother when I was a child, but haven't done it in years until recently. I have pictures on my blog of two of my recent efforts (just scroll down a bit). They are not traditional (one's not even all one piece -- oh, the shame!).
Also, sorry about the Ked. I have the same paranoia about socks. I can't get rid of the remaining one because then the lost one will reappear.

Are you familiar with the artist Nikki McClure?

I can see a face in the paper-cutting - a sad cattish sort of face :) It's lovely
Posted by: sooz | May 15, 2008 at 08:18 AM
Did you cut that out entirely with an exacto knife or something? Amazing & impressive!!!
AnD I loooooVe your Anthropologie purchases!

I *finally* did my first paper cutting out of your mailorder #8! I did the "girl" for my mom for Mother's Day. It was my first time to paper cut and I loved it. If you opt to do another paper cutting mailorder at some point in the future, you wouldn't hear me complaining ;-).
That Clothkit designed by Rob Ryan is gorgeous.

Love, love, love this papercut! And thanks to your email order #8 I've been hooked on papercutting ever since. The Rob Ryan book is on the wish list, and now so is the scherrenshiiittieee (oh you know which one I mean) book.

just bought your book from our local bookstore - can't wait to learn to sew and bend it!
blessings!

I will have to get your book- would love to try papercutting. Beautiful! I wish we had an Anthropology near us...
Also the lost Ked- if you had bought the exact same pair, for sure the missing one would turn up. Perhaps you now have a new planter ina shoe! You did the right thing!

Is there room in that jar for one more? Very Cool!
Posted by: Sarah | May 15, 2008 at 12:00 PM
I had to leave a comment to let you know that our local library has a copy of your book in our "new" section. all the way out here in little NH. there were two women looking at it and they couldn't wait to check it out and try some of the projects. one of them was saying she had not had the urge to sew anything in years but the projects in the book looked like just what she needed to get back in to it. I just thought you might like to know that.
and, I took out the new Japanese cookbook by Morimoto and he has a dish in there called "angry chicken".

YOU are the reason I've been into papercutting this year so far! You'll like the Hans Christian Anderson book... it's really written for children to read. I am in love with Rob Ryan's work and now YOURS! Everything you do is so much fun! Anna Maria is at Quilt Market this week (you already know that!) and I am also a big Heather Ross fan!!! Bono was in town here on Tues. (no one knew) but I get more excited by fabric designers myself!!!

I love the paper cut.
Cute new shoes. I am slowly being driven insane by a missing Paul Frank purse that's in the shape of a monkey head that my 2 year old daughter had to have on a recent trip to New Orleans. I suspect it's somewhere in the house but I've tossed the place and can't find it. Why do these things happen?

Looove the papercuts! wonderment though: what sort of paper do you use? I want to try but card stock seems too thick for a smooth cut and tissue paper seems too fragile. Any recommendations?

letterpress. that's all i'm saying.

I have to be in Hines for work this weekend. I am so bummed to miss all the cool stuff in Portland this weekend. :( Have fun for me.

I just love your paper cut! I also have been over to clothkits site and have his skirt on my wish list, his work is amazing.

Your paper cut is delightful! I've only done the most rudimentary ones out of All Year Round (the book about celebrating festivals with children...) but Nikki McClure is one of my all-time favorite artists! You might inspire me to break out my exact-o knife set!
Posted by: Caren | May 16, 2008 at 07:04 PM
Sorry to leave 2 comments, but I just noticed Jenn's comment, and had to add that I *too* live all the way out in NH and our local library has your books prominently displayed amongst the "new" books! You're seeping the nation! :)

I hope to see more.

Exciting.

A lot of years ago I saw someone on TV who collected 'pastimes and games' from around the world. On her wall she had a few papercuts and I was fascinated and tried to find a book about them. It was in the dark days pre-internet and I drew a blank, even writing to 'Dover' who seemed to have alsorts of books on allsorts of crafts, but they couldn't help so I forgot about them. Now I see them popping up all over the place. thank you for your information. I'm off to get that book!Lovely blog.

Very sweet paper cut design was it from a dream? I love the clothkit from Rob Ryan too bad I live so far away. I'll try to get the book the book instead.

Thank you so much for mentioning the swap! It has been a lot of fun...making and getting a new bag. My target partner even gave me the great idea to make the PBB in a handbag size and I LOVE the result. We are starting round 2 tomorrow and I can't wait.
PS: WARNING: Be careful shopping with a Pleated Beauty Bag! I was at the grocery store, putting the items I needed in the bag and was stopped before I got to the checkout line because the manager thought I was stealing! I'm trying to do my part to save the Earth and I nearly get tackled to the ground and handcuffed! I couldn't believe it!

That's a really lovely paper cutting, Amy.
I plan to have a go at paper cutting myself when I can find the time between all my other projects.
Maybe when Mr Bump starts school...
