These cards were made for 2 reasons. Documentation and blank card requirements.
We have been writing down our kids comments on a master list the last few months because they have been getting more and more amazing. I know this is the case with all kids, but dang. So, I wanted to document these quotes and was originally thinking flash cards, but wasn't sure what to do with them. Then I was thinking small business sized cards—I could tuck in cards and gifts, but again, wasn't sure how they might be kept, save putting them in a scrapbook/photo album. We needed a blank card recently to give to a family member and I realized putting these quotes on cards would be perfect.
I love making homemade cards so much. It also fulfills my creative urges to combine stark simple design with crazy child brain. (Apologies to certain design talent who are totally over Helvetica, you know who you are.)

Oh my gosh, those are awesome!

These are awesome...what a brilliant idea.
Posted by: Mixing Bowl Mama | April 27, 2009 at 06:34 AM
I love these! What an excellent idea. And that second one is hysterical, the other day my son said, "Do you have anything I don't like that I can try?"
Posted by: martha | April 27, 2009 at 06:38 AM
so very great.
Posted by: mrmonkeysuit | April 27, 2009 at 06:39 AM
Fantastic! The helvetica is perfect. You always have the best ideas.
Posted by: Jenny B | April 27, 2009 at 06:41 AM
Precious! Such a great idea. Once mine starts talking, I think I'll have to keep a journal of these type of quotes.
Posted by: bellaguinness | April 27, 2009 at 06:41 AM
those are great! I need to get a notepad for 3yr our son's 3yr quotes. Yesterday his cousin Maddie 3yr gave a great quote.
"Where is the 'On' Button on this?" **She was playing with an Etch-a-Sketch. Maddie 3yo. :) I about died. Sign of the times, I guess, right?
Posted by: Deana | April 27, 2009 at 06:41 AM
Brilliant!!! We need to start writing quotes down, now that my 2-yr-old comes up with some real doozies.

Love the Helvetica - did you simply print via printer or screen print, or other Angry Chicken fancy goodness? :-)

Posted by: anne | April 27, 2009 at 07:05 AM
I need the Cliff Notes for that last one... is she listing things that work hard and well?
This is brilliant.
I may have to use my son's....
"I'm not frustrated. I am frustrating!" (Max, 2 1/2)

Posted by: Ginny | April 27, 2009 at 07:28 AM
What a great idea, must start to write down some of those crazy quotes my babies come up with.
"I love you more than Star Wars"
;)

Love, love, love these. What a fantastic idea.
Posted by: Sarah | April 27, 2009 at 07:39 AM
I love these cards. So gorgeous. It reminded me of when my daughter, who was 3 1/2 at the time, was drinking some juice said "I'm pretending I'm 5 and this is beer"
Posted by: Samantha | April 27, 2009 at 07:41 AM
Such a great idea. Even if I am psudo-over helvetica (ahem...). But it is a great font, and those quotes are even better!
Posted by: Mary-- The Yellow Door Paperie | April 27, 2009 at 07:41 AM
I have been thinking about this too. All these crazy, amazing, funny and smart things that come out of the mouths of babes. Great idea, I will try it! Or at least start a list for now!
Posted by: kyndale | April 27, 2009 at 07:48 AM
Great idea. I think jpegs on moo cards would be pretty fun too.

Posted by: Anne | April 27, 2009 at 08:14 AM
That's a great idea! Yesterday, my four-year-old brother (who can't stand bananas) told me that the banana I was eating was "stinkin' rich." I guess he meant it was rich in stink!
Posted by: Claire | April 27, 2009 at 08:31 AM

Posted by: Shalet | April 27, 2009 at 08:33 AM
Coolest. Idea. Ever.
Posted by: Melanie O | April 27, 2009 at 08:39 AM
Those are awesome. I'd bind them as a book with photos and a few of their drawings/letters tucked in-- that's the closest I'd get to a memory book!
Yesterday my daughter said 'chicken is healthy for you because it has fish in it.'
Huh?!
Posted by: hayley | April 27, 2009 at 08:41 AM
what a great idea!
Posted by: sara | April 27, 2009 at 08:46 AM
Totally cool idea. We also keep a list. One of my favorites: "oh my gosh! A freedom cat!" [in reference to a stray cat sighting]
Posted by: Zegi | April 27, 2009 at 08:57 AM
I love these!
Posted by: Amy | April 27, 2009 at 09:06 AM
hilarious! our current favorite is: "Good! I closed up the accordian so if someone breaks in they can't play it." Matt, 4 yrs.
Posted by: Mary | April 27, 2009 at 09:12 AM
Genius! My 2 year old told me the other day " I want no part of this!"
And just so you know...Jelly of course comes from Jellyfish.
Posted by: DeerDominique | April 27, 2009 at 09:18 AM
What a smart idea! I'm book-marking this page for when my yet-unborn mogrunt starts talking.
My mother-in-law only documented one memorable quote from my husband when he was a kid. (Context: his dad is a Baptist minister, so God, Jesus and church were a big part of the lexicon in his house.)
"Was God a movie star?"
Posted by: Steph VW | April 27, 2009 at 09:21 AM
I LOVE them -- what a GREAT idea!!
Posted by: Allegra | April 27, 2009 at 09:34 AM

Too funny. The other day Jack, who's my 4 1/2 year old, started counting in spanish to his older almost 6 year old brother Max. Max then started speaking a little spanish, combined with jibberish. Jack said to Max "I don't ACTUALLY speak spanish Max, I'm just pretending! Duh!"
Too funny...
Posted by: Paige | April 27, 2009 at 09:40 AM
That's so funny! Great idea. I've been documenting what my littlest has been saying with the intention of embroidering them on a quilt for his bed. Like "Mommy, my heart's beeping" and "I like moco-psychos" (mototrcycles)
I should give them a trial run on some paper before heading to make a quilt!
Posted by: Traci | April 27, 2009 at 09:42 AM
Those are awesome! I'm also toying with the idea of making home-made cards. Super cute!
Posted by: Jennifer | April 27, 2009 at 09:57 AM
so good. (and i still love helvetica. no matter what.)
Posted by: tracy Bartley | April 27, 2009 at 09:59 AM
Your girls are born comedians! I especially like the soup quote, i'm still chuckling over that one. Thanks for brightening my day!
Posted by: Nicki | April 27, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Oh, this totally beats portraits and the generic holiday letter. Too fabulous!
Posted by: Michele | April 27, 2009 at 10:08 AM
fantastic way to chronicle those moments!
Posted by: Allyn | April 27, 2009 at 10:31 AM
When my eldest was in first grade, they would have "keyboard" practice in the computer room, making cards with mousepaint squiggles on the outside and some heartfelt misspelled sentiment on the inside.
My favorite was "Dear Jessy, Just remember, eat bacon. I love you, and bacon."
I made it into a magnet and it's still on our refrigerator, much to her eternal mortification.
Love the cards!
Posted by: Ragnar | April 27, 2009 at 10:37 AM
Holy cow, these are freaking hilarious.
Posted by: betsy | April 27, 2009 at 10:54 AM
I love these! I've been making cards for a while and have found myself going more graphic and less "cutesie." The response has been overwhelming! Making a list of kid quotes is such a great idea too. I'm totally going to start writing down what my kids say!
Posted by: Travelingmama | April 27, 2009 at 10:54 AM
this is such a cute idea
Posted by: ashley | April 27, 2009 at 10:55 AM
I like the quotes in the comments section just as much as the ones in your post. My brother is still famous for saying "Hi Ho Silverware!" and calling sawdust 'treecrumbs'.
Posted by: Zoe | April 27, 2009 at 10:59 AM
What a great way to use the kid-speak that comes up all the time!
Posted by: Irene | April 27, 2009 at 11:07 AM
These cards are genius! Helvetica is the perfect font choice for them. Perfect. Perfect because it's slightly guerilla urban chic and lets the hilarious quotes come to the fore without unnecessary design distraction.
You are a fountain of brilliant things.
Posted by: Shelley Noble | April 27, 2009 at 11:26 AM
omg. that is awesome.
Posted by: amy k. | April 27, 2009 at 11:38 AM
well, thank you! I think Helvetica is a nice choice, too. I ususaly shy away from making kids stuff look too design-y, but I think this is a nice balance.
Posted by: amy k. | April 27, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Love them!!
Posted by: Taryn | April 27, 2009 at 11:42 AM
These are incredible-- thanks for the great idea! My son is almost 2 and is putting the funniest words together, so we'll definitely keep this in mind. I love making my own cards, and yours are priceless. =)

Posted by: mommycoddle | April 27, 2009 at 12:34 PM
What a great idea! I've been documenting more and more, too, mostly as my status updates on Facebook - everyone loves them. I like the idea of putting them on moo cards or something, too. :)

Great idea! My husband and I were just making a Top 5 quotes from our 3 last night...these cards are a great way to do something with our lists
Posted by: jennie | April 27, 2009 at 02:18 PM
That's a really good idea. I haven't been writing things down at all, despite the fact that the weird things my 3 year-old says keep me chuckling to myself all day.
Yesterday she told me "When our dogs pass out and we get a cat, I'll feed it grass."
Posted by: Kate | April 27, 2009 at 02:22 PM
These are absolute fabulous Amy. I love kid quotes. Many of our kids words & phrases have stuck & we still use them.
Posted by: Kirsty | April 27, 2009 at 02:28 PM
Such a great idea! I have been wondering what to do with those awesome things that come out of my son's mouth, like, "Mom are you qualified to teach childs goodly?" Love them!
Posted by: Kate Bessey | April 27, 2009 at 02:32 PM

Awesome idea! I love kid quotes!
Posted by: Nicole | April 27, 2009 at 03:19 PM
Though the quotes are definately funny, the thing that made me chuckle is the last remark about Helvetica. My hubs is a product designer and gets the associated design mags and graphics / typeface sales catalogs. I told him I had erased some "ugly" fonts from his old computer. All he said was "PLEASE tell me you didn't get rid of helvetica!" I definately knew better from reading his magazines - Helvetica is still a favorite in that arena.
Posted by: Sarah | April 27, 2009 at 03:19 PM
hahahaha, these are FABULOUS!

Posted by: Nicole | April 27, 2009 at 07:05 PM
I don't think Helvetica is outdated, no, absolutely, no! It's perfect for this card. and smart quotes!
Posted by: ning fathia | April 27, 2009 at 07:35 PM
This is totally brilliant. And that second quote had me laughing out loud. Stealing this idea? Absolutely.
