This is a kolache from Happy Sparrow here in Portland and I am now obsessed. I can't recommend this cafe highly enough. They have tasty kolache, great coffee, and are super nice. Baby ate a vegan special and a nutella filled kolache, and I had the same—and then took home one of each kind for weekend munching. So good!!
Thanks to all of you who braved the horrible rain and came out to Bolt last night! That was super fun.
Okay, Miss Delia turns 5 tomorrow, so I need to snap to it. She busy working on her "party flavors" which are really party favors, but I'm not about to correct her, 'cause how awesome is a party flavor?

It was fun to meet and chat with you at Bolt! Keep the fun blog posts and adorable books acomin!

Ah, the kolache - a delightful ancestor of the jelly-donut family! Too bad his descendants are unwholesome folk leaving terrible trails of powdered sugar... Makes me want to bake today - what else could one stick inside a bun? :-)

They sound delicious! Love the "party flavors".

I am from Czech republic - right now I am very proud of my origin. I do not find dishes inspired by czech or slovak cuisine very often, so this post cheered me up :-)
Thank you for this lovely blog.

Party flavours sound fun. Something like Rocking Raspberry or Slammin' Strawberry?

Oh my gosh a nutella kolache?!?! Yikes glad I'm not near Portland hee! The party flavour bit made me laugh... very cute :)

I'm a Texan of Czech heritage and I served kolaches at my wedding! A Nutella-filled kolac is definitely untraditional but sounds OH so good. Methinks that might need to go on my Christmas baking list.

So funny! Susan Beal & I were talking about kolaches the other day because she got one at Happy Sparrow... I had never heard of them until I lived in Texas, so I was surprised somewhere in PDX had them! Yay kolaches!

That's so cute. The mother of a friend of mine is from Brazil, and she calls them party flavors, too.

My daughter Charlotte turns 5 tomorrow also! (I just KNEW I had a labor buddy somewhere in this world ;-)
Charlotte is in love with hedgehogs and wanted a hedgehog themed party. The favors are this little tiny hedgehog statues from Schleich. My husband is right now constructing a giant hedgehog cake and the highlight of the party is a REAL hedgehog from the owner of a local pet shop that gives birthday presentations.

Kolaches are big here in Texas. There is a famous place between Austin and DFW called the Czech stop and they have wonderful kolaches.

It's after midnight, so happy birthday Delia!
Just saw Whip It with Miss Emily, and she was nice to not judge me for thinking that Maeby Funke is, like, totally sexy now.

Kolaches! Portland? Who Knew?!! I've eaten them all my life and now make them for family & friends. It's a Czech thing.
Last night I read about a group of ladies in the state (NE) who made among other things, Rosettes and now you wrote about Kolaches. Both are yummy treats from my childhood and now those torches have passed on to me since my Gramma is gone.
Thanks for the smile today.

I can honestly say I've never had a kolache and now feel like I'm totally missing out. I'll have to find a recipe.
