we got snowed in the last 4 days and the girls have been:
- Reading a ton—we finished reading Tom Sawyer and started To Kill a Mocking Bird (from our Family Library)
- Working on their DIY skills with intensity. Also, they were sledding a whole lot and we realized we don't have a lot of snow gear, like real gloves. Oops. We used socks instead.
- Working on their books—for a couple months now they have been writing and illustrating their own stories on StoryJumper. So far, they are just online, we haven't paid to get the actual book printed yet. It's been so fun. Sadie uploads her original artwork, Delia is learning so much about grammar, and Liddy is writing an amazing story about an elephant that owns a candy shop and Medusa makes an appearance. They are learning so much about writing along with basic graphic design on the computer—using scale, layers, placement features and formatting text. It's amazing to see and I had no clue when we started this how much they would learn on the computer side. We always make our own books (with paper and staples and draw everything) but they just took off with this in such a different way, it has been great to see it develop. StoryJumper provides a little outline for them to use first so their story doesn't get too off the rails as they go. It's also free (unless you want an actual book sent) and you can read other books written by kids, which are pretty swell.
- I ran out of sugar and we couldn't get to the store in all the snow, so I made cookies with sweetened condensed milk instead. Who knew? I had no idea you could do this, but you can. They were so good and really made us all very sick.
