We had a lovely time at the beach. It was cloudy and wet in the mornings and clear and sunny in the afternoons. I'm a bit sad at the local weather this morning now that we are back. Portland is so hard this time of year. Sunny and beautiful one day and then wet and cold today. Like wear a sweater and warm socks cold. bah. Here's a small foot and rocks. Lots of digging happened at the beach, I realized this when I saw the photos and only saw the top of my daughter's heads in every shot. They were constantly hunched over, digging.
We had a relaxing time-didn't take the laptop. (!!!) I read a magazine cover to cover and learned many wonderful and frivolous things that I meant to post about and have already forgotten. My brain has turned to mush. I think it was about short pants still being in and new hotels I should stop by on my next vacation to Greece. (ha.)
It was "Loyalty Days" in Newport, which is near where we were staying. We heard about it at the local coffee shop and then Pete found out while waiting in line at the post office (I love mailing things from post offices out of town, I'm not sure why, but I actually save up mail to do this.) that "Loyalty Days" was started by McCarthy supporters in the 1950s. Hence the "Loyalty" but now, as this local person pointed out, it has been taken over by the hippies. Pete thought this was really funny because the local person saying this looked like a big hippie herself. So, we missed the parade, which was in the rain and I think had more people marching than spectating, but we did go to the the fair at night. Sadie rode on the carousel and we saw all the rides lit up and looking so magical. Delia threw a mighty fit because she wanted to go on the little airplane ride and started scaling the fence (!) she is not 2 yet. I think we may have a wild one on our hands here. I know we do, actually.
Not everyone there at the fair had a full set of teeth and there seemed to be a lot of moms who were not a day over 16, but everyone was having a great time and I abstained from eating an elephant ear, which is very impressive, since I love any kind of fried dough more than is good for me.
