The best gift my mom gave me, when I became a mother myself, was to not really say much. She was so loving and supportive and just listened to all my concerns and worries. And being a new mom and a very type-A person, I had a lot of concerns. I overthought and questioned everything and often did this out loud, for hours. She never once, and still has not, questioned how I parent, what I feed my children, what we read, and who we are as a family. When I finally woke up from that new baby haze, I'm sure many months (maybe years) later I asked her why she never suggested things to me, or corrected me, or questioned my decisions and she said, effortlessly, because her mom never did that to her. She just listened.
Thank you so much, mom and grandma, for your unconditional love and support. And for listening. I hope to do the same for my daughters.
