vintage apron patterns

I am very pleased to have found this site (thank you Barbara)-a great resource for vintage apron patterns (these are for sale, too) I have created a vintage pattern photo gallery (see my side bar) for your viewing pleasure. I absolutely LOVE vintage apron patterns. They are so full of amazing ideas.I actually own very few, and to be honest, have more fun just looking at these images and then making up the patterns from scratch-so this is a very exciting find for me. If any of you have vintage patterns, please let me know. I'd love to have this be a big resource for you vintage apron lovers out there.

art apron

ahh-the power of the internet. Barbara Curiel sent me this image of this amazing art apron she created-in loving memory of her grandmother-here's some info she sent with it:

It seemed natural to make this piece an apron.  I have one of my grandmother’s aprons, which, poor thing, is very threadbare.  But I copied the pattern onto wax paper and easily made a new one.  This atypical apron is fully lined because I wanted it to be substantial and not solely utilitarian and I also wanted to do at least some quilting on this piece even though it has no batting.  Although leaves dominate the outside, the inside fabrics are florals, and I used one especially appropriate flowering cactus fabric to honor my grandmother’s love of the desert. 

The photo transfer is from a picture taken by my mother, Dolores Brinson, of my grandmother in her garden. Most of the leaves are fused, though some are lined and sewn down loosely for a 3-D effect.  I had some vintage pink seam binding, which I used for the pockets and the shoulders.  The text on the apron was done with acrylic paint and my new set of alphabet stamps. The text is actually a poem I wrote some years ago, and I rearranged the stanzas in order to use the space more effectively.

here are images from the lovely book (isbn n4-579-10972-4) that Karen sent me called Les tabliers sont arrives de Paris It is such a beautiful inspirational book. Much more about the apron as fashion than for gettin' down and dirty in the kitchen. Most of these aprons use simple pleats and tucks in the waistband for shaping, and ribbons are often used instead of fabric waistbands. Very clever.

here's a link to a garden apron from Martha's website. This is the only photo of it-which doesn't look very apron-ish, but it is for an apron, I promise. The dishtowel apron is super cute, also from Martha's site and that pattern is here.
Kay sent me this great link to a free pattern for a knitted apron from Knitty. Thanks! And here is the free crocheted apron pattern that was in County Living Magazine last month. And another crocheted apron, this one is for gardening, here. Here is a pattern for a child's bonnet that turns into an apron. (boy, I need to come up with a better word than "here", will work on this, I swear.)

Two mini "guy" aprons-well, at least they are on this guy. (actually looking at them now, pete wouldn't wear them, but hey, the model seems to be fine with it.)I always keep my eye open for man aprons-since I will be using this as a Tie One On theme soon. These are swell and are from Sprout Home.
